Data shows consumers gravitated to larger screens over the holidays

flurrymobile-phablet-statistics

The percentage of phone-tablet hybrids distributed in the week leading up to Christmas nearly doubled from last year, data shows.

In 2014, according to Flurry Insights, 13 percent of new device activations were phone-tablet hybrids (e.g. the size of a GS6 Edge+ and higher). 2015’s numbers show a significant increase, with 27 percent of new activations being from larger smartphones. 54 percent of new activations in 2015 were medium-sized phones, while full-size tablets and small tablets each came in at 9 percent of new activations.

Additionally, consumers are preferring larger smartphones over smaller sizes. The Korea Times reports that Samsung sold about 100,000 units of the Galaxy Note 5 just three days after its launch in South Korea, with numbers only continuing to grow worldwide.

But those numbers don’t tell the whole story. When it came to Android devices, 50 percent of new activations were phone-tablet hybrids in 2015. For comparison, only 12 percent of new iOS device activations were of the larger size.

Twitter updates rules on abusive behavior and hateful conduct

twitter_logo_blue

Twitter issued a statement earlier on its blog that they’re still fighting abuse and will not tolerate any harassment.

One of the major downsides of social media is the amount of abuse and harassment that takes place. Twitter has updated its policy multiple times to better enforce its rules against abusive users and has updated its service terms yet again. Twitter added a “hateful conduct” section which further exemplifies the issue and indicates what could happen if a user breaks these terms.

Earlier this year, Twitter made it easier to report trolls and harmful behavior. Today, the company sent out an important reminder that it hasn’t forgotten about these issues and will continue to take them with all seriousness.

Every 2016 Samsung Smart TV will be IoT ready

Samsung_ IoT_TV

At CES 2016 Samsung will unveil that every 2016 Smart TV they make will be Internet of Things (IoT) enabled and connect with the SmartThings platform.

Also, all of Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TVs will apply IoT hub technology. This means the TV will be able to be used as the controller for all other IoT devices. Think of it like being the basestation. They will be able to connect and control more than 200 SmartThings compatible devices like lights, cameras, thermostats and more.

Hyun Suk Kim, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics said:

“The 2016 line-up of Smart TVs will offer consumers new possibilities and cement Samsung’s market leading position, as the first company to launch IoT ready TVs.”

The SmartThings platform is what will mainly power all of this. It is what allows users to control IoT devices from their smartphone or TVs. Rather than having many different apps, you only need one app to rule them all.

‘Tilt is a new augmented reality game for Android Wear smartwatches

tilt-app-logo

A new augmented reality game for Android Wear recently launched. Developer 13 App Design calls the app Tilt and bills it as “the first of its kind augmented reality app for Android Wear smartwatches.”

To play, users view their Android Wear watch through their phone to display the game. Once the game is displayed, users tilt their smartwatch up and down and side to side to roll the sphere in order to pick up boxes without falling off.

Tilt is ad free and has no in-app purchases. It’s also worth noting that the game, in its current state, is a proof of concept, demoing the possibilities of augmented reality on Android Wear smartwatches.

The app’s description says an expanded version with more levels and features will be released, but does not say when.

LG now pushing out Marshmallow update for G3 in Poland

LG_G3_Fromt_On_Screen_Buttons_LG_Logo_TA

LG has finally started rolling out the long-awaited Android 6.0 Marshmallow over-the-air upgrade to all unlocked variants of its former flagship smartphone, the G3, located in Poland. In addition to the latest build of the open-source operating system, the upgrade also transports several much-needed stability improvements aimed at improving the overall speed of the handset.

Providing the update process goes according to plan in Eastern Europe, the upgrade should be heading to regions in Western Europe, along with the United States, in January. Although, it may take a little while longer for American carriers to start pushing out the OTA as they have to adapt the code in order to ensure it works on their devices.

HTC Vive passes through the FCC

HTC-Vive

With CES just around the corner, manufacturers all over the world are gearing up to unveil their latest smartphones, tablets and wearables — and HTC is no different. Earlier today, the Taiwanese company’s Vive Virtual Reality (VR) headset made its debut appearance at the United States of America’s official cellular certification authority, the FCC, where it gained the right to be sold in North America.

Unfortunately, the paperwork that accompanied the VR doesn’t disclose anything about the internals of the device, but we do know where the certification labels will sit on the headset, controllers, base station and link box. Up until now, the unit has always been powered by video cables which plugged directly into the headset, but this filing suggests that HTC may have found a way to wirelessly transmit video.

BlackBerry Priv gets discounted in Canada

BlackBerry_Priv_Android_smartphone (2)

The BlackBerry Priv’s first-ever price cut just began in Canada, and the United States is scheduled to follow in the months ahead. It should be noted that the discounted price active in Canada is only for the two-year contract option, which has been reduced to $249.99 CAD or approximately $180.

At this point in time, the offering is only available on Canadian carrier SaskTel. Inventory already appears to be sold out on the carrier’s website and we don’t know when/if the listing will show more stock. However, if you live in Canada, you can still claim the deal at SaskTel retail stores.

Pricing in the United States remains $249 with a two-year contract exclusively on AT&T, but Verizon customers won’t feel left out for much longer. It shouldn’t be much longer before the deal or one similar hits the rest of the world. We’ll let you know when it does.

Japan Display Inc starts production on Pixel Eyes 2, might come to next gen Xperia phones

Japan-Display-2nd-generation-Pixel-Eyes

Japan Display Inc. has started building the 2nd generation “Pixel Eyes” touch LCD display modules. The new modules are designed with high performance phones in mind.

The new materials used in the 2nd gen modules produce much deeper blacks, shave off border edges (0.5mm versus 0.8mm previously), and bring the ability to use a finer stylus (1mm versus 2mm previously). They also bring wet finger support.

Although Sony hasn’t come right out and said it, they have said there is a high chance these displays will be used in the next Xperia Z phones.

LinkNYC’s Public WiFi hotspot installation has begun in New York City

LinkNYC-wifi-hotspot

New York City has finally begun the transformation of 10,000 archaic public phone booths into futuristic, city-wide Wi-Fi terminals. We reported last year that construction was to begin by 2016, and with just three days to spare, the first few kiosks have began undergoing the conversion.

Witnesses on the street have seen these new LinkNYC kiosks being erected around the five boroughs of New York. When they are up and fully functional, New Yorkers, and tourists alike, will be able to connect to  free Wi-Fi within 150 feet of any kiosk. Any passerby will also be able to access an Android tablet inside of the kiosk for web access, travel maps, and much more. These kiosks will also display advertisements for funding purposes, as well as breaking news alerts to keep the citizenry informed.

For those of you excited for these new Wi-Fi enabled kiosks, you will only have to wait a little while longer. Once the kiosks are up and running a test wave will commence to ensure that the Wi-Fi is functioning properly across the city. After the Wi-Fi connection is found up to snuff, the Android tablets, with their added functionality, will be brought online.

Samsung’s Exynos 8870 shows up, likely set for other manufacturer usage

Samsung_Exynos_Quad-CoreSamsung’s Exynos 8890 is bound for their high-end, flagship devices to compete against the other heavy hitters in the market, but some of Samsung’s business still comes from selling their silicone to third-parties instead of keeping everything in house. That’s where the Exynos 8870 comes in.

The 8870 has finally shown up online, and it looks like it’s being made explicitly for other companies to use. That doesn’t mean it’ll be a downgraded processor, however, as early reports pin it close to the Snapdragon 820 in speed, which is nothing to sneeze at. The Meizu Pro 6 is rumored to utilize the processor once it’s finally available.

Unfortunately, there’s not much else to dig into about this upcoming processor. No details on architecture or exact specs, but hopefully Samsung gets things cleared up over the next few months.

Here’s Samsung’s first Galaxy A 2016 commercial

GalaxyA2016_A7

Samsung launched its first commercial today for its newly refreshed line of Galaxy A smartphones. The ad is certainly entertaining, showing those silly moments in life we all go through, and says that the Galaxy A smartphones are “exclusively made for you.”

The Korean tech giant debuted the Galaxy A9 in China last week. The company also officially announced the Galaxy A3, A5, and A7, all set for the Chinese region; however, they’ll come to other markets in early 2016.

Samsung’s Galaxy A lineup certainly isn’t a bad batch of smartphones. On the contrary, some of them are actually very nice for being mid-rangers. And for those that aren’t wanting to shell out a ton of money for Samsung’s next flagship, the Galaxy A series might just be worth looking at.

Reliance Jio will begin offering their 4G network to India in 2016

Reliance-JioReliance Jio, which happens to be a subsidiary of one of India’s private businesses, has announced that they’ll finally be rolling out a 4G network to customers over the next year. Currently, the network has gone live for employees, but the rest of India can expect to see it in 2016.

This network is completely forward-thinking and will supposedly be able to be upgraded to 5G when the time comes. This does mean that their network will be 4G only with no backwards compatibility with 3G, which means VoLTE will be a high priority.

While Reliance Jio won’t be the first carrier to offer 4G in India, they will be the first to offer a unified network across the entire country. The official rollout is expected sometime in March or April.

Samsung_Galaxy_J1_leak_122715

Early 2016 is sounding like a probable time for Samsung to launch a new Galaxy J1. This will replace the old generation Galaxy J1 and include a bump-up in specs and a refreshed design.

Based on a recent Twitter leak, the Galaxy J1 SM-J120F will have a 4.5-inch display with a 480×800 pixel resolution. The device will be powered by Samsung’s in-house Exynos 3457 processor backed with 1GB of RAM. The leak also indicated that Android version 5.1.1 will be onboard. Last year’s Galaxy J1 was released in the first quarter, so we might catch a glimpse of the device as early as CES 2016. More details should be arriving soon, but for now, the most you can do is feast your eyes on the leaked image.

Huawei D8 high end smartphone in pipeline for 2016

huawei_phone_d8

A new rumor out of China indicates Huawei still has plans to release the Huawei D8 even though the timing has been pushed back to 2016. An original roadmap for Huawei devices showed the Huawei D8 on schedule for 2015, but that is not going to happen.

The Huawei D8 will be powered by the as-yet-unannounced Kiron 960 processor. The device will have a quad HD 5.5-inch sapphire glass screen and come equipped with 4 GB of RAM. All of this adds up to a device targeted at the high end where Huawei hopes to start competing against Samsung’s devices. Early indications are that the device will be priced in excess of 5,000 yuan ($774 USD).

Unknown Samsung tablet receives Wi-Fi and Bluetooth certification

Samsung-Even-Logo

Another day another Samsung device it so seems. Earlier today we received word that an unknown Samsung tablet received Wi-Fi and Bluetooth certification.

The unknown Samsung device registered with model number SM-375S. Judging from the leaked listing, it has an 8-inch display and shipped out of country for testing purposes. It then notes that all devices are set to be destroyed following the conclusion of their evaluation. Each handset is marked with a $103 value indicating it’s a budget tablet, most likely a new member to Samsung’s low-end Galaxy Tab series.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth certification(s) are among the first tests to take place in a device’s attempt to hit the market. That means there’s still plenty of room for leaks to go around before any official unveiling or launch. Perhaps we’ll find out more at CES 2016. For all the details on the test results, check out the gallery down below.

The LG Optimus Zone 3 is coming to Verizon pre-paid

LG_Optimus_Zone_3_Verizon_Pre-paid_122515

Based on a recent Twitter post, LG will launch the successor to the Optimus Zone 2 as a Verizon exclusive very shortly.

The LG Optimus Zone 3 is an upcoming handset that’s headed to Verizon pre-paid. The Zone 3 will be a low-end handset aimed at first time smartphone users or someone interested in something simple that won’t break the bank. No specifications were leaked, but one could expect them to be mighty similar to its predecessor.

The leaked render shows off a very familiar design with the Verizon branding on the rear side and LG written at the bottom of the display. The handset looks to be made of plastic, thereby keeping the price down low. If you’re looking for a budget friendly Android smartphone on the country’s largest carrier, you may want to consider the LG Optimus Zone 3, which is due out in the next few weeks. We’ll keep you posted on when it does.

New video shows off the ‘quality and durability’ of the BlackBerry Priv

BlackBerry_Priv_Angle4

BlackBerry clearly built its Priv handset from the ground up and wants to show users the care that went into the making. A new video does just that.

A new video was uploaded just yesterday that uses animation to show how the BlackBerry Priv was assembled. In the video, you’ll notice that bits and parts were put close together in a certain way for an added layer of protection from drops and abrasion. Clearly, BlackBerry wants to show us how much care and effort it put into the Priv hopefully making it as durable as possible. Heck, maybe next year we’ll see a BlackBerry with water resistance!

Things are looking good for the company and are only going to get better from here on out. We highly suggest you watch the video embedded down below, it was quite interesting to see what BlackBerry did here.

UMi_Zero_2_leak_122415

In case you don’t know, UMi is a small chinese smartphone manufacturer. The company has been hard at work preparing a new handset called the UMi Zero 2, which features an e-ink display on the rear side.

Today we received word that the handset will be released in the second quarter of 2016. We also got ahold of some specifications including a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display with a QHD resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. Powering the handset is a Helio X20 processor from MediaTek backed with 4GB of RAM. The handset will also include a front-facing camera and a dual rear-facing camera setup along with 64GB of internal storage and a super durable 2.5D glass screen. The design of the handset appears to be made of nearly all aluminium. The images also show an ultra-slim profile and a front mounted home button, but things could change between now and the official launch.

According to sources, the UMi Zero 2 will be kept budget friendly and cost an affordable $299 off contract.

Sprint’s 2-year contract option may not be going away afterall

sprint_logo_with_text_fall_2015

Earlier this year, Sprint reported that 2-year contracts would be going away at the conclusion of 2015. However, according to a new report, this may not be the case for the U.S. carrier.

2-year contracts are clearly coming to an end, but then again, maybe not for Sprint subscribers. Sprint wants to ensure that its users have options when it comes to paying for their phone and data. When signing up with Sprint, users have the choice to pay for their device upfront for retail price, pay with installment payments, sign a 2-year agreement, or if you have an iPhone, sign up for the new iPhone forever offering.

We should be hearing from Sprint in the coming days to know exactly what the carrier’s plans are moving forward. So let’s just keep patient.

HTC One X9 is now available in China

HTC-One-X9-press-render

HTC, as promised, has finally made the One X9 official in the Chinese region, and it’s looks almost identical to the company’s new flagship, the One A9.

The HTC One X9 takes many design hints from the One A9, but there’s also been a lot of small design alterations, especially with the introduction of a new camera visor.

HTC’s new smartphone sports a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 IPS display, a MediaTek Helio X10 octa-core 2.2GHz processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and a microSD slot. It also has a 13-megapixel rear camera with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) that can capture RAW images as well as well as shoot 4K video. Additionally, there’s a 5-megapixel front camera, as well as a non-removable 3,000mAh battery with fast charging.

The One X9 will sell for ¥2399 (USD$370) in the Chinese market, a significant step down from the One A9’s ¥2799 (USD$432) price point. It will be available in Gunmetal Grey and Silver color variations.

Unfortunately, there’s been no official word if this device will make it to European or Western markets.

Dripper’s step-counting live wallpaper comes to Android Experiments

drippler-app-logo

Drippler announced today that it made the code for its step-counting live wallpaper available on Android Experiments, allowing developers to examine how Drippler integrated Google Fit into this live wallpaper.

The developer’s step-counting live wallpaper is unique because it takes advantage of technologies in Google Fit that enables the wallpaper to visualize how many steps the user has taken. It does this by filling up a water drop. The more steps you take, the fuller it gets. Once it’s completely full, you’ve met your steps goal for the day.

Verizon-branded BlackBerry Priv passes through FCC

BlackBerry_Priv_Angle

Earlier today, an unannounced Verizon-branded variant of the BlackBerry Priv made a quick pitstop at the United States of America’s official cellular certification authority, the FCC. This information comes less than a month after Big Red tweeted a photograph of the device with “Verizon Wireless” software branding.

Although this model is destined for Verizon, it will remain identical internally to both the AT&T and Unlocked versions of the handset, therefore, it will continue to pack a 5.4-inch AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM, an Adreno 418 GPU, an 18MP rear-facing camera, a 2MP selfie shooter and a 3,410mAh battery.

If you’d like to view the full FCC filing, hit the source link below.

Samsung plans to cut smartphone shipments by 12% next year

samsung_logo_curved_display_TA

Samsung released some pretty great phones in 2015, but new reports claim Samsung is planning on reducing their smartphone shipments by 12% in 2016. It sounds like a fairly large cut, but they will still be producing roughly 420-430 million devices.

The reductions will also probably be only from regions where Samsung phones don’t sell as well. Currently, Samsung has a global market share of 20% followed by Apple, and Chinese companies, which they don’t plan on losing any of.

Samsung also plans on keeping the Edge version of the S7 because the S6 Edge has received a better response than anticipated. With the slight reduction and expected high S7 sales, Samsung plans on maintaining its global market share.

Case claiming iMessage set to not deliver to Android dismissed

apple_logo_black

Apple has come out on top in a legal battle that claimed iMessage was rigged to not deliver to Android phones.

Specifically, the lawsuit in question stated that Apple’s iMessage service “intercepted” and retained messages that were intended to be delivered to Android owners. Despite the claim, federal judge Lucy Koh has chosen to dismiss the case in a single-paragraph order.

This is the second time this year that Apple has won this particular case, following a ruling earlier in the year that decided the group wasn’t eligible for class action, Business Insider reports.

The original class-action lawsuit was filed by a former iPhone user who said that she was no longer able to receive messages from other iPhone’s after switching to an Android device. Following the complaint, Apple acknowledged the issue and released a patch in May addressing the issues, however the suit continued until its dismissal in August.

Back in August, we reported that both Google and AT&T filed motions with the federal courts to access materials being filed during the lawsuit’s discovery phase.

Apple continues to host a service specifically designed to help customers de-register their phone number from the iMessage service.

Another option for those aiming to switch to Android involves disabling the messaging service through the iPhone’s settings before switching the SIM out to the new handset.

First round in NVIDIA v. Samsung goes to…

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_4_Front_Samsung_Logo_TA

Yesterday, a trade judged ruled that NVIDIA violated three separate patents, all relating to GPUs held by Samsung. While this is just the beginning of the legal battle between the two companies, Samsung has landed the first round victory in a match guaranteed to go the full twelve rounds.

These findings will now go to a full review by the International Trade Commission which has the legal authority to block products from coming into the United States. No matter what the ITC decides to do, NVIDIA has vowed to appeal this ruling, arguing that the patents held by Samsung are just dust collectors used only for predatory patent cases just like this.

The irony in this case is that this ruling is being handed down in a retaliatory suit brought by Samsung. About a year ago NVIDIA brought suit against Samsung, alleging that Samsung violated its rights following failed licensing talks. The International Trade Commission claimed no rights were violated, a ruling that NVIDIA has vowed to appeal.

NVIDIA_Logo_01_TA_CES_2014

This case is part of a broader strategy by NVIDIA to bring in income from other areas besides its sale of graphics chips. While NVIDIA’s graphics chips are quite popular, it has had a hard time penetrating the enormous processor market. Licensing royalties is an area it thought could bring in more income, claiming that other companies, like Samsung, are using their patented chip designs without Nvidia’s permission. So far this new strategy looks like it is only bringing NVIDIA headaches.

This legal battle is very far from over. Aside from the appeal NVIDIA has already pledged, Samsung has brought a civil suit against NVIDIA which will be heard in Virginia this upcoming January. Get your popcorn ready, this fight is going to be a long one.

Free bubble level tool discovered inside Google Search

google_search_bar_marshmallow_102215_TA

A Google employee speaking over on Reddit has revealed a free bubble level tool within Google Search and Google Now, activated simply by searching for, not surprisingly, “bubble level”.

google_search_bubble_level

Android smartphone and tablets owners may already be aware of a number of cool hidden functions within Google Now, and now we’re looking at yet another. This free bubble level can also be spotted on the iPhone, accessed using the same method.

Google’s nifty new bubble level adapts based on whether you’re viewing it in portrait or landscape, also serving as an alternative to similar apps on the Play Store. Although the look and feel of the tool is very basic, it does what it needs to do.

Android Police points out that an orientation issue reported on Chromium for Android 6.0 may cause the bubble level to malfunction on a number of devices, including the Nexus 5.

Of course, there are plenty of other free alternatives on the Play Store for precise measuring with improved functionality, but it’s nice to know there’s a quick and easy way to use a bubble level now, right within Google’s apps.

LG_GPad_LTE_stylus_122315

The LG G Pad II 8.3 was unveiled earlier this year. Now we have a glimpse of a new LTE variant with an included stylus.

The LG G Pad II 8.3 LTE was unwrapped earlier today and includes all the same specifications as its counterpart the LG G Pad II 8.3 Wi-Fi. Included in the name is a 8.3-inch Full HD display. Powering the tablet is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 620 processor containing an octa-core CPU paired with the Adreno 405 GPU and 2GB of RAM. An 8MP rear-facing camera is present along with a 2MP front-facing camera. 16GB of onboard storage is included that’s expandable via the tablet’s built-in microSD card slot, which is a common find on LG devices.

Other sensors include a 4,800mAh battery, 4G LTE connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, and GPS. Most notably is an included stylus for those looking to take notes and make precise drawings. The device runs Google’s Android 5.1.1 straight out of the box.

Pricing has not been specified, although the device is said to go up for sale in South Korea tomorrow. Hopefully a U.S. rollout will follow.

Samsung debuts Galaxy A9 in China

samsung_galaxy_a9_official

Though rumors of a late November/early December launch didn’t pan out, Samsung has debuted the Galaxy A9, Samsung’s newest upper-mid range phablet, in China.

The Galaxy A9 has a 6-inch Full HD (1920×1080) OLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a 13MP rear camera, an 8MP front-facing camera, and a 4000mAh battery. And below the display, embedded in the home button, is a fingerprint scanner to enhance security and enable Samsung Pay.

Unfortunately, Samsung will be shipping the Galaxy A9 with Android 5.1 Lollipop rather than Marshmallow.

It’s not expected to see the Galaxy A9 anywhere outside of China.

Vodafone UK now rolling out Wi-Fi calling update for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_Back_Lower_S6_Logo_02_TA

Vodafone UK has started pushing out a rather unexpected update to all its carrier-branded models of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge located in the United Kingdom. This upgrade carries support for the operator’s fairly new Wi-Fi calling service, which authorizes users to place calls via the Internet when they have no cellular signal without incurring any extra charges.

Unfortunately, you will need to be a subscriber of either a Pay Monthly Red, Red Value, Red+ or Business Premier plan to use the Wi-Fi calling platform. You’ll also need to ensure that your device was bought directly from Vodafone because if you purchased it from a third-party company, it won’t bundle the correct drivers for the feature to work. Other than these two provisos, using the service couldn’t be easier. Simply install the upgrade, then text the word “CALLING” to 97888 to enable it.

Xiaomi’s Mi 5 leaks with full render and hardware specs

xiaomi mi 5Xioami’s Mi 5 smartphone has leaked ahead of an official announcement, and there’s not much left to the imagination after this one. Renders of the device show the front of the phone and the bottom side with charging ports and speakers, and we’ve got a full rundown on hardware onboard, too. The only thing we haven’t seen is the back of the device.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 will have a 5.2-inch display of either full HD or QHD resolution, a powerful Snapdragon 820 CPU, 3/4 GB of RAM and 32/64 GB of storage, depending on which option you opt for, and a 16 megapixel rear camera paired with a 13 megapixel front-facing camera. The home button of the device also doubles as a fingerprint scanner, which will supposedly be one of the fastest sensors on the market.

The device uses a USB type C charging port and has a non-removable battery, and will run Android 6.0 with Xiaomi’s UI on top.

Supposedly, the 3 GB RAM/32 GB storage option will run 1,999 Yuan, or $308, while the 4/64 GB option will cost 2,229 Yuan, close to $354. As always, Xiaomi is pricing this thing very aggressively.
