Google Photos’ new ad shows off improved image recognition feature

Google’s latest advertisement posted on Android’s YouTube page shows off the advanced image recognition capabilities of the Photos app. Recently, we had seen similar commercials highlighting Play Music and the Google app.

The latest ad demonstrates how Google Photos app helps a young woman find out that El Gato Loco, a freestyle wrestler, is actually her ex-boyfriend. The Photos app spots the similarity between the feline mask worn by the wrestler and the cat that the couple used to have, helping the young woman recognize El Gato Loco.

There is no doubt that Google Photos’ image recognition has seen a significant improvement since it started, but it still has a long road ahead. There have been many gaffes in the past including the one where the app recognizes an African American user as a gorilla. In fact, the Photos app on my phone recognized a dancer friend as a dog, but that may have something to do with the pose or the makeup that they were wearing. However, a more accurate recognition will always be a welcome change.
